Thinkpad X61 Tablet and Photoshop are friendly eventually

imageWell, a long time passed since the last time I posted about this problem and the way to solve is just what I haven’t thought it would work, but it works–99% great. I have tried on every situation from messed system to after clean installation, and it still works properly.

This is what I did:-

  1. uninstall every drivers about touch + Wacom digitizer — restart once.
  2. download driver here
  3. then install. That’s it.
  4. download Wacom bamboo driver from Wacom directly
  5. then install it, now you will be able to use your pen, not your finger
  6. now you’ve got to have your multi-touch in hand and install it.
  7. At this point, everything should be ready.

I have tried on Windows 7 64-bit. It works like a charm for both digitizers, no luck, no drama ever again–just work. However, you have to use only Photoshop (32-bit), not 64-bit one.

This is unbelievably easy, isn’t it? I don’t know why I could not get it work at first. If you still have the issue, get into device manager (start >> “devmgmt.msc”) then you have to see something like this;

the yellow asterisk ones are what Photoshop is looking for (bamboo driver). The rest is from multitouch driver. You’ve got to have both to get both passive and active work together.

If you have a problem, just ask. I might be able to help :-P

Note: rarely yet I found that Photoshop doesn’t recognize the Wacom pen properly. I mean the pressure doesn’t register at all. You just have to re-open Photoshop, then it will be all set. This is waaaay better than restart your system.

Workaround X61 Tablet Pen problem in Photoshop

It’s an odd that we can’t use Tablet features in Photoshop if you are using Tablet PC with Multi-Touch screen (Both active and passive digitizer) Although a pen sensitivity works flawlessly with every other programs such as OneNote, Alias SketchBook, InkSeine, or even Paint.NET, it just doesn’t work with Photoshop. Yes, you could draw on it, but without sensitivity? why do we have to use an active digitizer? passive one should be enough.. Okay every problems have a solution. This still applied. Just for a reference, I am testing on Thinkpad X61 Tablet Multitouch, but this is a problem of all Multitouch tablet.

The problem is Photoshop can’t recognize the Wacom pen on Multitouch screen. In other words, an active digitizer on Multitouch Tablet PC will not work in Photoshop. I don’t know if this should be a Adobe or Wacom issue though. But if I have to answer, it should be Adobe that needs to work with Wacom about this since other programs work just fine. From this problem, when you draw, you will get something like this.

You can tell that I’m not an artist or any kind close to that. So don’t laugh at me :-/ As you see, what you got from original driver of you tablet. Isn’t worth using tablet at all….

Solution:

Here is what you have to do, you have to go to Wacom website and get a bamboo driver. Then installed it. Easy, right? You will get something like this instead:-

image

I’m not quite sure which one is better–still kid drawing :-/ but you can see a difference, big difference since an active pen is working properly now. Nonetheless, this is not a permanent solution at all because touch–or passive digitizer–will not work under a bamboo driver. It means that you will be able to use only Wacom pen, mouse and keyboard–not your finger. If you want to touch again, you just have to install multitouch driver. Then everything will be normal again–Photoshop will not recognize active pen again. In case you want to use Photoshop w/ active pen in the future, all you have to do is reinstalling a bamboo drive back and forth again and again :-D

I don’t know when this problem will be solved permanently but now, at least, you will be able to get an advantage of your machine. “May the active pen be with you”

updated–same day–12:44pm: After I messed with all this, I might get Multitouch work. I just need to check about it to see whether it’s going to last. Up to now, they are still working after several restarts w/o tweaking a bit. Stay tuned!

InkSeine is out!

image

Finally, it’s released one day earlier than what we knew at the first time, Valentine’s gift probably. You can go grab it here.

Since it’s BETA, it would be impossible that it is bug-free program. See the limitation here. However, that’s not going to make this great program bad at all. We all know that we could workaround this anyway.

To improve this program, don’t forget to tell what you think to developer :-P Thus, we will have better program in any perspective. But for now, I have to go testing InkSeine myself.

Have fun.

Getting to know more about InkSeine

image InkSeine is probably designed solely for pen; every single thing is completely new world of controlling; you won’t find it easy if you are not using with the pen. Imagine that you almost don’t have to click, just tap and drag. I’m really exciting waiting for try in person.

Here the samples come:-

> Twelve Days of InkSeine by Ken Hinckley@Microsoft Research, today there are up to day #3 but they are all coming soon.
> GBM InkShow: InkSeine – you will get tons of idea what Inkseine is. Very good show indeed.

I can’t wait for Feb 15! Nevertheless, I really hope InkSeine would have a notebook tab organization like we used to have in OneNote. That’s going to be awesome.

InkSeine will be available after Valentine’s day.

We’ve got a good news from Microsoft Research community; The tablet centric program will be ready for download from Microsoft Research on February 15, 2008 after it’s only beta for full-time Microsoft employee for a while. If you don’t know what it is, take a look at this.

It looks really promising program for Tablet PC or UMPC, we’ll see what it can do. I’m very happy to see the tablet-related program coming after the great OneNote 2007 :-P Stay Tuned!
